Mei Lanfang was born in an actors' family. His grandfather, Mei Qiao-Ling was an actor at the Imperial Court during the two successive reigns of the Emperor Xian-Feng and Tong-Chi. He was famous for his talent in Beijing Opera and Ku Chuang. Mei Qiao- Ling was especially good at Ch'ing I and Hua Dan and was titled one of “the best thirteen (actors) of Tong-Guang”.

  Mei Lanfang's grandmother was Chan (1841- 1924). She was Chen Jim-Que, a Sheng's daughter. Chan was indeed a kind woman who was good in maintaining household.

  Mei's grandfather was Yang Long-Shou, a famous actor of Pi-Huang. He has a reputation of “a real Wu-Song” and “a real Shi-Xiu” (both were historical figures). He once launched the “Xiao- Rong- Zhuang- Ke- Ban” (the name of a training school). Famous Pi-Huang actors like Yang Xiao-Lou, Cheng Ji-Xian were also trained in that school.

  Mei Lanfang's father Mei Zhu-Fen (1972-1898) was also a Dan. Not only Mei Zhu-Fen's appearance, figure were very alike to his father Mei Qiao-Ling, he liked to play Mei Qiao-Ling's opera too. He was very famous among Chinese public. Lamentably, he died when he still young.

  Mei Lanfang's mother, Yang Changyu (1876-1908) was Yang Longshou, a Wu Dan's daughter.

  Mei Lanfang's uncle, Mei Yutian (1865-1912) was a famous musician for Pi- Huang. He knew nearly all musical instruments such as Hu-Qin (Two-Stringed Chinese Violin), Di (Chinese Flute) and Gu (Chinese Drum). He played for Tan School's master Tan Xin-Pei for a long time. Mei Yu-Tian, together with famous player of Dan- Pi- Gu (Blown Vertically) Li-Wu was named “The Best Three”.

  The first wife of Mei Lang-Fang was Wang Ming-Hua, who was the famous Wu- Sheng, Wang Yu-Lou's sister and the aunt of Sheng, Wang Xiao-Lou. Mei Lang-Fang married Wang Ming-Hua when he was 17. Wang Ming-Hua was a skilful wife. Not only she changed the depleted situation, she also assisted Mei's stage performance. Wang Ming-Hua died due to lung disease. Fu Zhi-Fang was Mei Lang-Fang's second wife. Like Mei Lang-Fang, she was devoted to Beijing Opera too. When she was young, she also study from Wu Ling-Xian and performed in Sui-Ya-She of a Kun Ban. In the year of 1912, Fu Zhi-Fang stepped down from the stage; concentrate in assisting Mei Lang-Fang's career and to be a devoted wife.

  Mei Lanfang had four children, his son Mei Baochen graduated from the Faculty of Science of Shanghai Fu Dan University ( 復旦大學 ) and is now a senior engineer of a research centre in Beijing Architecture and City Planning. He plays Two- String Chinese Violin (Hu-Qin) as hobby. Mei Bao- Chen once learned from Wang Shao-Qing and Xu Lan-Yuan and been a musician for certain Mei-School repertoire which was part-time in nature. Apart from his performance, he is also a teacher for Mei Lang-Fang's grandson Mei Wei in voice training aspect. Mei Bao- In memorial of his father, Chen wrote books like “Memorial my father – Mei Lanfang”.

  Mei Lanfang's another son called Mei Bao-Zhen (or Mei Shao-Mo) graduated from Beijing Yan-Jing University( 北京燕京大學 ) and is now a researcher in American Research Section of Chinese Social Science Faculty( 中國社會科學學院美國研究所 ). He is writer and translator of many books. Mei Bao-Zhen wrote books like “My father – Mei LangFang” and “Beijing Opera and Mei Lang-Fang”.

  Mei Baoyue, Mei's daughter who graduated from the Girls' Art and Science Section in Shanghai Fu Dan University ( 復旦大學 ). She learned to play Sheng from Li Gui-Fen at a very young age. Apart from that, she also learned from Ma Lian- Liang, Chen Wiu-Hua, Wang Shao-Lou, Yang Bao-Zhong, Guan Da-Yuan etc. respectively. Mei Bao- Yue is one of the actresses of the Beijing Opera Institution ( 北京京劇院 ) and frequently act with his brother Mei Bao-Jiu together on stage.

  Mei Baojiu is son of Mei Lanfang and is the only successor of Mei School's Ch'ing I part. He first acted on stage when he was only 10 years old (1944). His first teacher was Wang You-Qing. Other great actors like Tao Yu-Zhi, Zhu Chuan-Ming, Zhu Qin-Xin had been her teachers too. Since Mei Bao- Jiu was 16, he formally joined Mei School's opera and performed around. As Mei Bao-Jiu learned from Mei Lang-Fang directly for many years and had many other actors' supports, his silks raised rapidly. Mei Bao-Jiu frequently performed and became popular in Hong Kong, Taiwan and overseas.
